Cumulative dominance and probabilistic sophistication

چکیده
Machina and Schmeidler [Econometrica, 60 (1992) 745–780] gave preference conditions for probabilistic sophistication, i.e. decision making where uncertainty can be expressed in terms of (subjective) probabilities without commitment to expected utility maximization. This note shows that simpler and more general results can be obtained by combining results from qualitative probability theory with a ‘cumulative dominance’ axiom. 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Cumulative Dominance and Heuristic Performance in Binary Multiattribute Choice
We study the effectiveness of simple heuristics in multiattribute decision making. We consider the case of an additive separable utility function with nonnegative, nonincreasing attribute weights. In this case, cumulative dominance ensures that the so-called cumulative dominance compliant heuristics will choose a best alternative. For the case of binary attribute values and under two probabilis...
متن کاملCognitive ability and strategic sophistication
In three experiments we examine the extent to which strategic sophistication (i.e., inductive reasoning, iterative dominance and level-k thinking) is determined by broader cognitive skills. In the first experiment we replicate previous results showing strong associations between cognitive ability and sophistication in a game of iterative dominance. We then extend the results to a game requiring...
متن کاملM-sophistication
The m-sophistication of a finite binary string x is introduced as a generalization of some parameter in the proof that complexity of complexity is rare. A probabilistic near sufficient statistic of x is given which length is upper bounded by the m-sophistication of x within small additive terms. This shows that m-sophistication is lower bounded by coarse sophistication and upper bounded by soph...
متن کاملProbabilistic sophistication and stochastic monotonicity in the Savage framework
Machina and Schmeidler [Machina, M., Schmeidler, D., 1992. A more robust definition of subjective probability. Econometrica 60, 745–780] show that probabilistic sophistication can be obtained in a Savage setting without imposing expected utility by dropping Savage's axiom P2 (sure-thing principle) and strengthening his axiom P4 (weak comparative probability). Their stronger axiom, however, embo...
متن کاملINTERPERSONAL RELATIONS AND GROUP PROCESSES Racism, Conservatism, Affirmative Action, and Intellectual Sophistication: A Matter of Principled Conservatism or Group Dominance?
Using data from 3 different samples, the authors found that: (a) the relationships between political conservatism and racism generally increased as a function of educational sophistication; however, the relationship between political conservatism and anti-Black affect did not increase with educational sophistication, (b) The correlation between political conservatism and racism could be entirel...
